KIRTON AND FALKENHAM GARDENERS CLUB
July visit – Thurs 11 July , ‘ The Laburnums Garden, South Elmham
Cars Green 6.00pm or assemble 7.00pm.
June visit - Swann’s Nursery, Bromeswell.
This visit made up for the scheduled trip last year which had to be cancelled due to bad weather. 30 members made the trip and we were given a talk and conducted tour of the 35 acre site. Swann’s specialise in trees, shrubs and conifers, large numbers of which are container grown and can be collected without notice. They also offer forest trees, and can quote for fencing and hedging. Swann’s also offer a landscaping and lawn turfing service. After the conducted tour we met for tea and cakes and a question and answer session..A lot of the trees and shrubs are raised on site in cuttings but also some are brought in from Holland, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. The nursery uses a staggering 6 million gallons of water a year on the sandy soil site. Swann’s extensive price catalogue is available from the nursery and visits can be made at any time during opening hours.
July visit
For July it is our first visit to Jane Barstow’s ‘ The Laburnums Garden ‘ The Street, St. James South Elmham, Halesworth, IP19 0HN.
Created over the last 25 years the garden features at least 24 laburnum trees plus herbaceous beds and borders. A garden for wildlife. This garden is open on the National Gardens Scheme list so this promises to be a special treat. Cars at the Green 6.00pm or assemble 7.00pm.
Summer Garden Party
Our annual members’ event, the summer garden party, will be on Saturday 20th. July and will be hosted by Carol and Les Long who will be opening their Weir Place garden for members.
There will be the usual tea, coffee, cakes and strawberries and cream for members to enjoy. As last year there will be a charge of £3 per person for which you will receive a ticket for the grand draw.
The garden party will be from 2.00pm to 4.00pm and we look forward to seeing you all then.
August visit
Thurs. 8th. August - and it is our last evening visit for the summer when we are at ‘The Shawsgate Vineyard & Winery for a tour and tasting evening.
Cars at the Green 6.00pm or assemble 7.00pm. Special note ;- this event is fully booked and only those on the booking list can be accommodated.
Summer outing
Our annual summer outing this year takes place on Wednesday 4th. September when we travel to the RHS Gardens at Wisley, and the day includes the late summer flower show. There are one or two tickets left at £17 per person so if you would like to go contact Jenny on 448571. Times for the coach will be in the August Review.
Tales from the Allotments
Writing notes for the Review seems to make time fly by faster than for other folk or is it me just getting longer in the tooth! It seems a short time since we welcomed in 2019 and here I am advising you of the August evening visit,, our last of the summer, and by the time you read this the daylight hours will be getting shorter ! So make the best of the daylight hours while you have them.!
The plots at this time of the year always look good – bare earth has disappeared under fast growing crops and we start to harvest our summer fruit and veg. Asparagus finishes at the end of June but is replaced by the very tasty mange tout peas which should be picked before peas form and eaten same day as picking if that is possible. One of my favourite vegetables , absolutely delicious! Early broad beans are also at their tender best. My courgettes and African butternut squash survived the cold May nights and are now storming ahead, neighbours please note! Runner beans have also benefitted from the recent rains. All soft fruits are looking good but , of course, must be protected from the dreaded wood pigeons. Everybody will be enjoying new potatoes now and if you have some left over try slicing the cold spuds an grilling in rape seed oil really great for a late night snack!
Gardeners World - sad to hear that Carol Kline has become the latest victim of the BBC’s diversity panel and will be making fewer appearances on Gardeners World. This is a shame because she is a very experienced and entertaining presenter. However you can catch Carol on her channel 5 gardening programmes. One of my favourite GW presenters now is Nick Bailey who has blossomed on the programme this year, lets hope he does not fall foul of the diversity lot, he does have a smart face stubble which should be a help, and of course Nick is due to talk at our Christmas meeting . Can’t wait!
