KIRTON AND FALKENHAM GARDENERS CLUB
NOVEMBER MEETING – SARAH COOK - ‘ SIR CEDRIC MORRIS – IRIS BREEDER, GARDENER AND ARTIST
THURS 8th. NOV 7.30pm Village Hall
OCTOBER MEETING - For our October meeting we welcomed David Mitchell retired planning officer from Mid Suffolk Council with responsibility for trees. David’s
Talk was titled ‘ Right Tree in the Right Place ‘ and his excellent slides illustrated the problems arising when trees are planted without proper thought as to what they would look like in years to come. Research shows that some 50% of trees planted lead to problems and often legal disputes with neighbours.
Regular pruning is essential to keep the tree in good shape and with relatively shallow roots it is important that there is adequate water access.
There is a wood of ancient oaks which are hundreds of years old near Butley Oyster which David recommends for a visit. David has 20 acres of woodland where he has lived since 1987 and has been the source of oak for his new kitchen! Council tree preservation orders can cause problems when trying to remove unwanted trees.
58 members enjoyed our first talk of the Autumn programme.
NOVEMBER MEETING
Sarah Cook will be talking on ‘ Sir Cedric Morris, Iris Breeder, Gardener and Artist’ . Sarah is a retired head gardener from Sissinghurst and on her retirement in 2004 moved to Suffolk and is the champion of Morris irises. In collaboration with Howard Nurseries Sarah won a gold medal at Chelsea in 2015.
This should be a special evening and Christmas tickets will be on sale at £3 Thurs 8th. Nov - 7.30pm village hall.
COMMITTEE MEETING
At the recent committee meeting it was agreed that the annual membership fee would remain at £10 for the 2019 year. Membership for 2018 stands at 88 and hopefully we can exceed this and hit the magic 100 for next year. There are a number of new people in the village so why not bring a friend along to join us for 2019!
We have also decided to bring back the produce stall for club nights so if you have spare produce, plants etc just bring them along and I will do the necessary.
CHRISTMAS MEETING
Our Christmas meeting this year takes the form of a quiz night. There will be teams of 6 but don’t worry if you are can’t make that number as we will fix teams on the night. Tickets will be on sale at the November meeting at £3 per person to include a glass of mulled wine or juice. You can bring your own drinks for the evening and we will be taking lists for food at the November meeting. There will be the usual grand draw for club funds and would be grateful for any prizes , contact any committee member or just bring along on the night.
So don’t forget we are in the Church Hall for this one , start 7.30pm., Thurs. 13th. December.
DOBIES SEEDS - Yes it’s already time to start thinking about 2019 and we will again be using Dobies who offer excellent discounts for club members.
The catalogues for 2019 are now available and will be there for you at the November meeting but if you cannot make the meeting you can get your copy from Ray Bignell, on 448291.
TALES FROM THE ALLOTMENTS
Not a lot to report this month except to say there are still one or two plots available, contact Susan Harvey. It has been a trying year weather wise so we hope for more friendly conditions in 2019.
