November meeting – Ian Bull – ‘Hyde Hall, Past Present and Future
Despite being probably the wettest day of the year some 55 members turned out for Ian Bull’s illustrated talk on RHS gardens at Hyde Hall. Ian is an experienced garden manager with the RHS who took over the gardens in 1955 and developed to the 360 acres site which it is today. Hyde Hall is set in the heart of rural Essex and is one of the finest gardens in the East of England. Highlights include Dry Garden, Hilltop Garden and Winter garden and there is also a Global Growth Vegetable Garden. Ian’s talk was supported by excellent slides of the gardens in full summer glory enabling members to forget the winter weather out side. The gardens are now open every day except Christmas Day and well worth a trip down the A12 for a visit.
Christmas Party - 7.30pm Church Hall Thurs 12th. December.
It’s party time and our very special guest speaker is Nick Bailey presenter of Gardeners’ World, free lance horticulturalist , best selling author, garden designer (including Chelsea) and very much in demand speaker. We will be having the usual popular buffet with mulled wine and soft drinks. There will be a grand draw for club funds and we would welcome donations of prizes, to any committee member or just bring along on the night. There are still one or two tickets available, £5 members or £10 guests, contact Jenny on 448571. So a chance to hear a very special speaker and enjoy our end of year celebrations.
Produce stall
There will be no produce stall at the Christmas party but it will be back for our January meeting. So, bring along any spare produce, plants or seeds and we will sell for club funds.
Raffle
The committee have decided to run a monthly raffle for club funds starting with our January meeting. Most gardeners’ clubs have raffles on club nights and this is a good way of raising funds for the club and keeping membership fees as low as possible. Malcolm Robertson will be organising things and he will welcome any prizes you can bring on the night.
January meeting - for our first meeting of 2020 we welcome Jaime Blake head gardener of Alan Bloom’s 17 acres of world class gardens at Bressingham. Jaime’s talk is entitled ‘The Weeding of the 5000 with 2 Hoes and 5 Wishes ‘ This promises to be a lively start to 2020 so come along and renew your membership – still only £10!
Dobies Seeds
The new Dobies seed catalogues for 2020 are now available and include over 50 new varieties. Remember you order direct from Dobies quoting your unique order code and receive a whopping 45% discount on seeds and 10% on other items. The catalogues will be available on club nights or from Brian Barker on 448372.
2020
The new year is on the horizon and 2020 also means the club celebrates its 20th. birthday and we will be looking to bring in a top line speaker for next year’s Christmas meeting. The new year kicks off with our first meeting on Thursday 9th. January when membership renewal is due and our membership fee remains at £10 for the year’s programme.
Tales from the Allotments
December and January is a quiet time on the plots , mainly a time for tidying up but a good time for planting crops such as garlic, onions and broad beans providing the ground is frost free. One or two plot holders have not renewed so there is an opportunity to give it a go, if of interest contact Susan Harvey on 448780.
So it just remains for me to wish all club members, plotholders , Roselea Express andSue and Nick Claydon a happy Christmas and good gardening in 2020. Also a reminder to hang on to your December Review as there will; be no separate January issue
