February 2012 meeting
11/02/12 13:56
March meeting – Thurs. 8th. March 2012 7.30 pm Village Hall
Adam Paul – ‘Seed Sowing ‘ followed by AGM
February visit – Bosch Lawn & Garden Ltd, Stowmarket
Gardeners are a hardy lot (hardy perennials?) as was confirmed by an impressive turnout , 25 members braved arctic conditions for a conducted tour of the factory’s night shift operation.
There is nearly a hundred years of history on this site, founded as Suffolk Iron Foundry in 1920 producing mangles, wringers etc, followed by the famous Suffolk Punch mowers, Qualcast & Atco until Bosch arrived on the scene in 1995. Now HQ & production unit for Bosch Lawn & Garden , mowers, trimmers, chain saws etc. come off the lines to an amazing 800,000 production units a year, and growing!
Debbie gave us an introductory talk backed by a string of impressive company statistics ( Bosch Group worldwide lodges 15 patents a day), and then Roy gave us a conducted tour of the factory - German smooth efficiency operating in the heart of sleepy Suffolk.
We are indebted to Debbie for making this visit possible.
March meeting – Thurs 8th. March , 7.30pm Village Hall.
For our March meeting we welcome Adam Paul who will be talking on ‘Seed Sowing’. We have met Adam during our two visits to Parham Hall but this will be his first visit to Kirton. Adam is a very experienced horticulturalist and we look forward to hearing him speak on seed sowing.
We had a strong membership renewal at out January meeting and if you could not get along then make sure of your membership by joining on March 8th. and , of course, claiming your new membership card with details of our packed 2012 programme – still only £5!
Annual General Meeting.
Our annual general meeting will follow on after Adam Paul’s talk. We hope that as many of you as possible will stay behind for the AGM as this is a once a year chance for the committee to get feed back from club members. The 2012 programme is our most ambitious yet, we have a new style membership card, a club website plus improved communications with members and the RHS, and it is useful to get your views on these changes.
There will be a report on the club’s activities for 2011, the treasurer’s financial report for 2011 and the election of chairman, treasurer, secretary and auditor. We will also elect a new committee member as Sheila will be standing down in March. The club is grateful to Sheila for her input over the past years. Nomination forms for club officers and committee are available from Mike Sampson or myself.
Rouen 25/28 May 2012.
Our trip to Normandy is fully booked with a waiting list and those booked have received the January newsletter. Jo and guide Johan are now working on the finer details of the trip and there will be further news next month.
Final payments with travel insurance details should be delivered to Alma at 50, Meadowlands, Kirton by 1st. March with cheques made out to Kirton and Falkenham Gardeners Club.
Late Summer Outing – RHS Wisley Sat. 8th September
We will be having a late summer outing this year . Dick feels it would be good to see RHS Wisley in the late summer and what better time than the mellow early September. But there is also a bonus in that our visit coincides with the RHS Wisley annual flower show, so there you go ‘ two for the price of one’! Now this trip will be very popular and tickets will be on sale at our March meeting, members £16 , guests £18 . So make sure you get along to the March meeting and book your place.
RHS
Unless you are a private member of the RHS club members can no longer contact the RHS direct with horticultural enquiries. Any enquiries should now be passed to Jenny Bearcroft who is the club’s RHS Liaison Officer and Jenny will pursue the matter on your behalf. Jenny is on 448571 or email
Communications
The club has a very wide membership and through the good offices of Jenny Bearcroft we have now opened an email database of members to allow the club to contact members with up to the minute information. Our Review notes are of necessity some three weeks old and not every member has access to the Review.
So if you have email and would like to be on the club’s list please let Jenny know. We are very grateful to Jenny for setting up this facility.
Fairhaven Estates – Kirtling Tower
The gardens are open under the NGS scheme Sundays 25th. March and 1st. April. Details at March meeting or contact me.
