Coffee, tea and homemade cake will be available between 10 am and 2pm, with homemade soup and a roll available at lunchtime. It’s a great opportunity to meet up with friends and neighbours so come along for a chat and see the lovely snowdrops!

Village Sale Trail Result

The sale trail was once again enjoyed by many and for once the weather was on our side.  We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who booked a stall to go on our map and to everyone who volunteered their help on the day in various locations, selling maps, refreshments and checking in on the stall holders.
Also of course thank you to those who came  to have a look around the stalls, grabbed some goodies and stopped in for refreshments at the village hall.
We raised a fabulous £265 in total to donate to local groups, charities or good causes.  Some of this will be donated to the local Osprey Explorers group who meet weekly at the scout hut, we are still looking for suggestions for at least one other to donate to
– if anyone has any suggestions please let me know by email

Kirton Light Railway

KIRTON LIGHT RAILWAY
The annual visit of the Chernobyl children took place on July 22. The group consisted of eighteen children, mostly aged around ten years, together with their supporters from both Ukraine and the Lions Club.
The day was sunny and warm, and ideal to ensure that all the kids (as well as the Chernobyl children!) got at least a couple of rides on the garden railway. A big thank you is due not only to the members of the Lions Club but also to the usual group of local helpers. A special mention should be made of the sterling effort made by Brenda Reditt who cooked or supplied almost all the refreshments for the children. Never were so many sandwiches, cakes and buns consumed in such a short period of time!
When the train rides were over there were smiles on all the faces, and we were also able to hand over to the Tree House Children’s Hospice in Ipswich a cheque for £180. The group was then taken by the Felixstowe Lions Club for lunch and to visit the beach – a rare treat for residents of the Chernobyl area.
Thank you to all who supported the event in so many different ways.

Thank you from Gary

A huge THANK YOU to all those who recently supported a fundraising cheese and wine event held at Kirton Church Hall on Friday 21st November in aid of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. I have been astounded how the people in the village have supported the Essex & Herts Ambulance service as well as my family and I during the time since my motorcycle accident.

Thanks to everyone's generosity in purchasing tickets, donating raffle prizes, purchasing items from the air ambulance stand and cash/online donations the evening raised a grand total of £ 1701.50 for the charity.

More good news is that whilst reviewing its charitable grants, the Parish Council, inspired by the information at the event, voted to grant Essex & Herts Air Ambulance £200.

Running alongside this event an ebay auction was also in place with all donations once again going to the Essex & Herts Ambulance service. Funds from this added to the above brings the grand total to £2711.43. This means together, as a community, we have donated enough to cover the full cost for the cost a life saving flight for someone in their moment of need.

So once again I would like to extend thanks to the community of Kirton, family, friends, plus Ian, the Air Ambulance volunteer, along with Waitrose who generously donated all of the cheese and wine for the event and Martin & Lorraine who helped in running the evening. I still cannot believe we have achieved such a good result. Thank you.

Music for an Autumn Evening 28 September

Friends of Kirton Church present
Illuminati
Saturday 28 September
7:30pm Kirton Church

Illuminati, an a capella group of some 20 singers under the direction of Andrew Gosden, will be performing in Kirton Church.
The programme will be a wide range of choral music from Elizabethan times, music of Thomas Morley John Dowland and others of the period who wrote magnificent madrigals which are still being sung today, and have come down through the centuries. Different periods have embraced them and given them voice along with many other genres of music but all through these, folk songs have been a link and are with us today in many different forms. Gerald Finzi, Michael Tippett in the 20th century, and even singers given to more modern modes have produced music which hopefully will survive as of old.

The evening in Kirton Church will be an exciting and uplifting one that will appeal right across the board to many people.

There will be no tickets but a retiring collection at the end of the evening. Refreshments will be served in the interval.

Come along to Kirton on the 28th of September for an evening of joyful and melodic sounds.

Kirton's Olympic Torch bearer

Kirton and Falkenham Parish Council were delighted that their nomination of John Beer as an Olympic Torch Bearer was successful. John was the founder of Kirton Kestrels Junior Football Club in 1986 and has worked tirelessly and selflessly ensuring the club’s continued success for 25 years, firstly as team manager then as secretary and treasurer. After retiring John was instrumental in gaining the FA Charter Standard for the club’s ten teams including the formation of the girls’ team. In addition, John took on extra time consuming roles of pavilion caretaker and groundsman; preparing three pitches weekly. John also undertook a long period of service to the village as a Parish Councillor. He led recreation ground projects including the erecting of floodlights, and planning and raising £230,000 funding for the new pavilion, which opened in 2005. He is an inspiration to the fulfilment of hundreds of young lives.
John will be taking part in the Felixstowe leg of Olympic Torch Relay on Thursday 5th July at around 5pm.  He will run between Granville Road and Arwela Road.
The parish council encourages all of John's supporters to come along and cheer him on.

Doubtless some of you have tracked Santa on previous Christmas Eves and, thanks to NORAD and Google Earth, the flight of the sleigh will be fully covered once again this year. If you have never joined the tracking of the flight before, you are in for a real treat. Sadly, due to the nature of the evening, there is no chance to contact Santa direct but you can see where he is at any given moment in real time. To find out more now and to follow the flight on Christmas Eve go to: www.noradsanta.org/en/index.html

Tree lighting ceremony

Around 40 parishioners and children braved the freezing temperatures on the evening of the 3rd December to celebrate the switching on of the Village Green Christmas tree lights. Having been welcomed by the Chairman, Michael Paul, Rev. Helen Davey offered a prayer and dedication for the tree, before all joined in singing carols, accompanied by the Salvation Army Band. A charity collection realised £42, which will be divided between the Salvation Army and Ipswich Children’s Hospice.

‘Bawdsey Research Station’ Commemorations 2010

In recognition of the historic events that took place in 1935 and 1940 which played a significant part in Britain’s war effort, commemorative events have been taking place at Bawdsey Manor during 2010. To commemorate the end of the Battle of Britain radio stations will be operated from the Manor on Saturday & Sunday 11 & 12 September. The Bawdsey Radar Museum (in the original transmitter Block) will also be open on Sunday 12 September.

During its time as a radar research centre and as an operational station for Chain Home radar, it was known by the acronym BRS – Bawdsey Research Station. It was here that Sir Robert Watson-Watt and his colleagues turned the ideas on which the well known experiment at Daventry (26 Feb 1935) was based into a full operational system, without which the outcome of the Battle of Britain would almost certainly have been quite different.

You may have watched the rather unimpressive demonstration of radar on Coast recently (you
can detect aircraft before you see them!). Come and see how it was really done!
