November meeting report:
Janet Danu spoke to us about women who she finds inspiring. Included in her selection were a Queen and her Great Grandmother- so there was plenty to hear. Janet gave a short biography of each of the women and included readings that linked to the women she had chosen. We heard poems, letters and extracts from plays.
The Queen that Janet picked was Catherine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII. It emerged that the life of a royal princess and subsequently queen was not an easy one. Despite the many challenges that she faced, she was the first female foreign ambassador, ruled the country in Henry’s absence and advocated that girls should be educated to the same level as boys.
At the other end of the social scale, Janet talked about her Great Grandmother who also faced tragedies with stoicism and lived to the age of 99. At the age of six, her mother died, and she was sent to live with maiden aunts. She married at 16, lost a son in World War One and a grandson in World War Two. Janet had fond memories of her and gave us her recipe for Christmas cake and it sounded very good, and one this writer may try…
The AGM followed. The committee was unanimously elected. Ann praised and thanked them for their hard work and enthusiasm. Kirton and Falkenham W.I has grown over the last year and meetings are lively with a busy programme of activities. Ann described us all as a hive of activity and said, ‘long may you buzz!’. Pam gave a vote of thanks to the Chairman, thanking her for her inspiration and guidance. Committee meetings are fun and Ann’s good sense guides everyone.
